Cat & Dog Collar Sizing
1/2" X-Small Dog Leashes 4' and 6'
- To ensure an accurate fit we strongly recommend that you measure your pet’s neck. It’s easy to do with a piece of string. Place the string around your pets neck, noting how much string it takes to go completely around your pets neck. Then measure that length of the string by laying it on a ruler or yard stick.
- Be sure the string lays on your pets neck the same way that you want the collar to fit. If you want the collar loose, measure loosely, if you want the collar snug with just a little room for comfort, place the string snuggly on your pet’s neck.
- The string measurement is your pet’s neck size. Measuring your pets current collar or using the size on his current collar will not be accurate and may result in purchasing an incorrect size collar for your dog.
There is some overlap in the sizing, for instance a pet with a 13″ neck can wear a SMALL collar 8″ to 14″ or a MEDIUM collar 12″ to 20″. Your choice. How to pick? Here is a little more information to help you decide.
6.5″ to 11″ = Cat 1/2″ wide, 6 1/2″- 11″ long | Small Cat Collar |
8″ to 14″ = Large Cat 1/2″ wide, 8″ – 14″ long | Large Cat Collar |
6.5″ to 11″ = X-Small dog 1/2″ wide, 6 1/2″- 11″ long | Extra Small Dog Collar |
8″ to 14″ = Small dog 5/8″wide, 8″- 14″ long | Small Dog Collar |
12″ – 20″ = Medium dog 3/4″ wide, 12″- 20″long | Medium Dog Collar |
16″ – 28″ Large dog 1″ wide, 16″- 28″long | Large Dog Collar |

How to measure for accurate harness fit
Measure your dog’s girth, while the dog is standing. Measure all the way around his or her rib cage and back to the starting point over the spine. You can use a string to take the measurement on your dog, then lay the string on a yard stick or measuring tape to read the length of the string. Take the measurement at the largest point of your dog’s girth.
We offer 12 sizes of harnesses, fitting girths as small as 9 1/2″ and as large as 36″. Each harness has an adjustment range allowing the girth to be adjusted to an exact fit. The table below lists each harness with a “Nominal Size,” which is simply a measurement somewhere in the middle of the adjustment range used as a name to identify the size. To find the harness that fits your dog, simply take the girth measurement described in the previous paragraph and locate the size where your dog’s girth is somewhere in the range between the “Minimum” and the “Maximum.”
In many cases, you’ll find two harness sizes where the adjustment range includes your dog’s girth. In such cases, choose the size that provides the greatest margin on each side. For example, if your dog’s girth is 17″ you’ll find that either the 16″ or 18″ nominal sizes will adjust to that girth. However, the 16″ harness will be adjusted to its maximum size, with no margin, while the 18″ size provides a 1″ margin both smaller and larger. The 18″ is the better choice in that example.
For the smaller sizes, the adjustment range is necessarily small and in several cases the Maximum Girth of one size is equal to the Minimum Girth of the next size up. If your dog’s girth falls exactly on such a boundary, choose the larger size. For example, if your dog measures 13″, choose the 14″ harness rather than the 12″ harness.
A final note: our harness are proportioned to fit average shape dogs, and may not fit well on dachshunds.

It features a welded steel dee ring and is a very good looking collar which shows well on many breeds. - Your preference of narrow vs. wide material width, including matching the width of collars and harnesses you already have
- Is your dog a puppy with growth to go, or is it an older dog who might lose some weight soon?
- Will your dog wear the martingale all the time or only while on the leash? If he/she wears it all the time, then you want to be sure you can snug it up enough where it can’t come off. Also, if it’s an outdoor dog a snug collar will be less likely to snag on bushes or the like. Conversely, if the dog will wear the martingale only while on the leash then you can choose a larger size, as the pull of the leash will snug it up (within the 3″ slip adjustment described above). A larger size is easier to put on and take off.

Our Buckle Martingales are essentially the same as the Martingales described above, with a buckle added to make it easier to put the collar on and take it off. There’s a trade-off, however, because the buckle reduces the available adjustment size. For example, one size listed above is the 3/4″ x 12-17″ regular Martingale. In the Buckle Martingale, the equivalent size is 3/4″ x 12-15″. The buckle takes up some space that is available for size adjustment in the regular style. The same point discussed above regarding the 3″ slip adjustment applies equally to Buckle Martingales.
Following are the available sizes for Buckle Martingales:
 | WIDTH | ADJUSTMENT LENGTH | MINIMUM LENGTH |
 | 5/8″ | 10″ – 12″ | 7″ |
 | 5/8″ | 12″ – 15″ | 9″ |
 | 3/4″ | 12″ – 15″ | 9″ |
 | 3/4″ | 14″ – 18″ | 11″ |
 | 1″ | 14″ – 16″ | 11″ |
 | 1″ | 15″ – 20″ | 12″ |
 | 1″ | 19″ – 28″ | 16″ |

When you need a very short lead to maintain tight control of your dog, a Traffic Lead is just the ticket. Traffic leads are very short:Â just 9″ long for the 3/4″ wide version and 10″ for the 1″ wide version. Traffic Leads are intended for larger dogs, where the dog is tall enough to bring the lead into reach. (Don’t buy one for your dachshund.) When the traffic, or other dogs, or whatever has dictated the tight control is behind you, you can leave the traffic lead dangling and use your regular leash, or you can attach a longer leash directly to the Traffic Lead using the standard D-ring at the end.
